The Making of the Stage at the Oscars

How London Brand OnlyRoses Helped Build This Year’s Set with 40,000 of their exclusive Infinite Roses®

Under the direction of The Academy’s chosen Designer, David Korins, this year’s stage at the 91st Academy Awards featured a monumental floral installation made exclusively of roses. Known for larger than-life installations at the lavish department store, Harrods in London, as well as several large-scale installations for private clients in the US, Europe and the Middle East, OnlyRoses was selected by The Academy to supply 40,000 of their exclusive Infinite Roses, the World’s best real, preserved roses, in the colour Scarlet.

OnlyRoses is known for their signature Infinite Roses® - real roses that last for years without water - allowing for an elegant stage that reflects the glamorous event, while being a guarantee for a lasting effect.

“Fresh-cut roses are impossible to use for this size of installation as they require water and do not last given the time it takes to install”
says OnlyRoses Co-Founder Anian Schmitt.

Founded in London in 2007 by husband and wife team Sabine and Anian Schmitt, OnlyRoses disrupted the luxury gifting industry, by elevating a rose from a flower to a luxury gift with their distinctly simplistic, fashionable and innovative design approach to high-end floral and luxury retail, and have created a new category with the introduction of their Infinite Roses – real roses that last more than a year without water, back in 2009. This powerful contribution to the world of floral gifting made OnlyRoses a global leader in premium and artisanal fresh-cut and preserved roses (Classic Roses and Infinite Roses®).

The opening of OnlyRoses’ luxurious flagship store in the heart of Beverly Hills in 2017, marked Anian and Sabine’s expansion to the US market and the Entertainment Business in particular, making them a favourite among Hollywood’s elite. Their unique roses and exceptional service have not gone unnoticed by The Academy which solicited their assistance for an unforgettable edition of the Oscars this year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was founded in 1927 as a professional honorary organization with the stated goal of advancing the arts and sciences of motion pictures.

2019 marks the 91st running of the Academy Awards often referred to as the Oscars after the Oscar statuette presented to winners of the Academy Award for Merit in a number of different categories. The categories cover many aspects of film making and this year the winners in the most important were:

  • Best Picture – Green Book
  • Best Director – Alfonso Cuaron - Roma
  • Best Actor – Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Best Actress – Olivia Coleman – The Favourite
  • Best Supporting Actor – Mahershala Ali – Green Book
  • Best Supporting Actress – Regina King – If Beale Street Could Talk

Apart from the awards and the acceptance speeches the most obvious media and paparazzi target is the pre-ceremony ‘red carpet’ parade which provides top couture designers with an opportunity to dress the most glamorous people in the World. The annual Academy Awards Show is televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

The Award season for film and television arts kicks off each year in January notably with the Golden Globe Awards, followed by the Producers Guild of America Awards (PGA), the British Film and Television Awards (BAFTA), culminating in the Oscars towards the end of February.
